Handcrafted Solid Red Deal Driveway Gate

This handcrafted driveway gate was custom-built from solid red deal, selected for its strength, durability and traditional appearance. The project marks the first of two large replacement gates, taking the place of a pair of gates that were originally built by my grandad over 20 years ago.

My grandad was a skilled and practical craftsman who built the original gates by hand, creating an entrance that served the property faithfully for more than two decades. Having stood the test of time through years of daily use and exposure to the elements, the gates were a testament to the quality of his workmanship. Replacing them has therefore been far more than a straightforward joinery project; it has been an opportunity to continue a legacy of craftsmanship and maintain a family connection to the property.

Designed to provide a secure and attractive entrance, the new gate combines robust construction with careful attention to detail, ensuring both long-term performance and visual appeal. Each component was accurately machined, assembled and finished by hand, creating a strong and stable structure capable of withstanding everyday use and the demands of the Irish weather.

While remaining sympathetic to the design and character of the original gates, the new build incorporates modern construction methods to improve durability and longevity. The clean lines and traditional styling complement the surrounding property while showcasing the natural grain and character of the timber.

As the first of two matching gates to be replaced, this project represents the passing of skills and values from one generation to the next. It honours the work my grandad carried out more than 20 years ago while ensuring that the entrance continues to serve its purpose for many years to come, combining family heritage, traditional craftsmanship and practical design in a single piece.
